Ask the Preacher

Sender's name: Tara
My family recently began attending this new church and I'm not sure how I feel
about something that they do. Every week they have this flier in the
bulletin stating how much money they would like the congregation to give each
week. They have a goal on the paper of how much money they would like
receive at the end of the year. The preacher very casually says what the
money would be used for and that they would really appreciate it. Is it
right for a church to do this? I feel like it ruins the whole service.
Thank you,
Tara

We plan and budget every other area of life, why not this? We need to realize that giving is not just something we do to pay the church bills. Giving itself is an act of worship. It is supposed to be an expression of thanksgiving to God. As far as sharing financial needs in worship service, there is nothing in the scripture that prohibits this. In fact, to be good stewards of the resources that God has given us would require that we do the best we can with the resources that he entrusts to us.
