Honoring Your Mother
John Telgren

As I reflect on Mother's Day, I am struck by the fact that the Bible says nothing about mother's day. However, it does give us instructions such as these:

"Listen to your father who begot you, And do not despise your mother when she is old” (Proverbs 23:22).

"Let your father and your mother be glad, And let her who bore you rejoice” (Proverbs 23:25).

We should always honor our parents. Whether a child, teen, or adult, we should value, respect, and appreciate them. Not only is it God's will, but also it is good for our health.

"HONOR YOUR FATHER AND MOTHER (which is the first commandment with a promise), SO THAT IT MAY BE WELL WITH YOU, AND THAT YOU MAY LIVE LONG ON THE EARTH” (Eph 6:2-3).

Mothers, don't give up. "Chasten your son while there is hope And do not set your heart on his destruction” (Proverbs 19:18).

There are times when this might seem tempting. But deep down, you love your children in spite of all of the stupid things they might do. So don't give up.

"Correct your son, and he will give you rest; Yes, he will give delight to your soul” (Proverbs 29:17).

Some of us have lost our mothers, and will tell you that you need to honor them now. But even if you have lost your mother, you can still honor her by the life you live. You can honor her by being godly, just, kind, honest, and dependable, and in so doing you ultimately will honor God.

Thank you, God, for giving us mothers.
